TL;DR: Jetson Nano is old and stuck on Ubuntu 18.04-era software, but it’s still a great always-on host for bounded edge workloads like OpenClaw. Treat it like an appliance, not a modern dev workstation.

Frank Kelly, who also owns a Jetson Nano, asked my OpenClaw bot to write a blog post about it as a test. It politely replied that it would draft something and wait for my approval before posting. That first draft turned into this post after some back-and-forth in the Telegram group chat.

Fair question. On paper, it’s outdated. In practice, it still does exactly what I need: run OpenClaw 24/7 with low power draw, stable behaviour, and no fan noise drama.

The obvious downside Link to heading

Let’s get this out of the way first: Jetson Nano is constrained now.

  • It’s on an old software base (Ubuntu 18.04 / older JetPack stack)
  • Package versions can be painful
  • You will hit compatibility issues if you chase brand-new tooling
  • It’s not the board for model training or heavy local LLM inference

If your goal is “latest everything,” Nano will annoy you.

Why I still use it Link to heading

My use case is pretty narrow: OpenClaw as an always-on personal assistant running at the edge.

For that, Nano still wins on the things that matter most:

  • Low power: cheap to run 24/7
  • Small footprint: easy to tuck away on a shelf
  • Predictable: once pinned, it stays stable
  • Cheap enough: good enough without spending Orin-level money

I don’t need it to be a universal AI box. I need it to be reliable.

That framing matters. A lot of the disagreement about Jetson Nano comes from people optimising for different jobs.

Why Nano got left behind Link to heading

NVIDIA announced JetPack 4 as End of Life in November 2024. JetPack 5 and 6 only support Orin and Xavier — Nano isn’t getting a newer stack. This isn’t neglect; it’s a hardware boundary.

Nano uses a Tegra X1 SoC with a 128-core Maxwell GPU (2014-era architecture). The newer JetPack versions require hardware features — Deep Learning Accelerators (DLA), newer memory subsystems, Ampere-generation Tensor Cores — that the Tegra X1 simply doesn’t have. NVIDIA’s proprietary GPU driver is tightly coupled to the silicon, and they can’t (or won’t) backport the modern L4T kernel and driver stack to hardware that old.

For ongoing kernel maintenance, NVIDIA points Nano users to ecosystem partners like TimeSys and Codethink.

Can you upgrade the OS anyway? Link to heading

Yes, to a point.

There are solid community efforts around newer userlands:

But the catch is always the same: you can put a newer Ubuntu on top, but you’re still locked to JetPack 4’s kernel and CUDA-era driver stack underneath. So you can improve the userland, but you don’t escape the underlying platform limits.

So the practical ceiling is: newer userland packages, same old GPU/inference stack.

The more radical option: vanilla Ubuntu without GPU support Link to heading

There’s one option most people overlook: ditch the NVIDIA GPU driver entirely and run a stock modern Ubuntu ARM64 image.

The Tegra X1 has had mainline Linux kernel support for a while via the upstream tegra device tree. That means you could, in theory, flash a vanilla Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04 ARM64 image and get:

  • ✅ Modern kernel with proper security updates directly from Canonical
  • ✅ Current packages, no ESM dependency, no JetPack baggage
  • ✅ CPU, RAM, storage, USB, networking, GPIO — all working
  • ❌ No NVIDIA GPU acceleration (no CUDA, no TensorRT)
  • ❌ No hardware video encode/decode
  • ⚠️ Display output may need some tinkering

For my use case — OpenClaw as an always-on control plane — the GPU doesn’t matter at all. It’s just Node.js making API calls. A clean modern Ubuntu with real security support could actually be the best path forward, and it would push the “security cliff” well beyond 2028.

I haven’t tried this yet, but it’s on my list. If it works, it turns the Nano from “ageing appliance with a 2028 expiry” into “cheap, silent ARM64 server with a long runway.” The only thing you give up is on-device inference — and if that’s not your workload, you might not care.

The mindset shift that makes Nano work Link to heading

The biggest mistake is treating Nano like a general-purpose 2026 Linux workstation.

I treat it as an appliance:

  1. Pin runtime versions
  2. Avoid unnecessary upgrades
  3. Keep the workload narrow
  4. Offload heavy jobs elsewhere

That approach removes most of the pain.

For OpenClaw, this works well because the Nano can be the local control plane (automation, integrations, always-on state), while any heavy inference can run via external APIs or newer machines.

If you’re doing this in 2026 Link to heading

If you’re running a Nano today, I’d strongly recommend following two things from my earlier posts:

  1. Enable security updates even on Ubuntu 18.04 In Installing OpenClaw on a Jetson Nano, I covered enabling Ubuntu Pro / ESM so you still receive critical security patches on an old base OS. Ubuntu 18.04 standard support ended in May 2023, so this is non-negotiable if the device is always on.

  2. Build Node 22 from source and run OpenClaw on npm + Node paths In Upgrading OpenClaw to Latest on Jetson Nano with Node 22, I documented the host-native setup I ended up preferring. The short version: run OpenClaw with explicit Node binary paths, avoid ambiguous shims, and treat clean reinstalls as the default recovery path when upgrades get weird.

That’s really the recipe: keep the base secure, keep runtime versions pinned, and keep operations boring.

Use Jetson Nano when Link to heading

  • You want a low-cost, always-on edge host
  • Your workload is bounded and stable
  • You care more about reliability than raw speed
  • You’re running automations, integrations, lightweight CV, or assistant orchestration

  • You need modern local model inference at scale
  • You want bleeding-edge CUDA/toolchain support
  • You want a hassle-free “latest Ubuntu + latest libs” workflow
  • You need high-throughput multi-camera analytics

What about newer alternatives? Link to heading

Jetson Nano is no longer the default recommendation for everyone. It’s now a deliberate choice.

Raspberry Pi 5 Link to heading

The Pi 5 (~£70-90 / $80-100) is often the first alternative people suggest, and for good reason:

  • Modern OS: runs current Debian/Ubuntu with up-to-date packages — none of the 18.04 friction
  • Huge ecosystem: more community support, tutorials, and peripherals than any other SBC
  • Great general-purpose server: perfect for homelab, automation, control-plane workloads

Where Nano still edges it: if your workflow specifically needs NVIDIA GPU/CUDA/TensorRT acceleration. Pi 5 has no GPU compute path for ML inference (the VideoCore GPU isn’t in the same category).

Bottom line: if you mostly need a clean, modern always-on Linux box and your AI inference happens via APIs, Pi 5 is probably the better buy today. If you specifically need on-device GPU-accelerated inference, you’re in Jetson territory.

Jetson Orin Nano / Orin NX Link to heading

Best path if you want to stay in the NVIDIA edge ecosystem with much more headroom and a longer runway. If you’re upgrading specifically for local inference, this is the cleanest answer.

Mac Mini (M-series) Link to heading

The elephant in the room. A base Mac Mini with Apple Silicon (M4 in 2024, ~£500-600 / $500-600) is significantly more capable than any Jetson board for general compute and even local ML inference via CoreML/MLX:

  • Unified memory architecture: 16GB+ shared between CPU and GPU, fast and efficient
  • Local LLM inference: can comfortably run quantised models that would choke a Nano
  • Modern OS and toolchain: no package compatibility pain
  • Silent, low power for a desktop: ~15-30W under load

The trade-off: it’s 5-10x the price of a Nano, and you’re in Apple’s ecosystem (no CUDA, no TensorRT). But if budget allows and you want a genuinely powerful always-on home server that can also do local inference, Mac Mini is hard to beat in 2026.

Mini x86 boxes (N100/N305 class) Link to heading

Very compelling for homelab-style control plane workloads with plenty of RAM/storage options. Boards like the Intel N100 mini PCs start around £120-180 / $130-200 and give you a full x86 Linux experience with decent single-threaded performance, proper NVMe storage, and enough RAM for most orchestration workloads.

Important caveat: these are vendor headline metrics and not perfect apples-to-apples real-world benchmarks. Price ranges are rough street estimates and can vary by reseller, VAT, and availability.

My rule of thumb: if Nano is already stable for your workload, keep it. Upgrade when you hit a real bottleneck, not because the spec sheet makes you feel guilty.

When I would personally upgrade Link to heading

I’d migrate from Nano when one of these becomes persistent:

  • Latency that affects daily usability
  • Dependency friction from the older base OS
  • Need for heavier local multimodal or video pipelines
  • Time spent maintaining workarounds exceeds hardware savings

Until then, Nano stays.

In 2026, Jetson Nano is no longer a future-proof dev machine. But as a purpose-built edge appliance, it’s still good value.

That’s the distinction that makes the rest of this post hang together: don’t judge it by benchmark charts alone. Judge it by whether it reliably does your job, every day, at low cost.

One practical framing helps: 2028 is the security cliff, not instant obsolescence.

If Ubuntu Pro/ESM is your security backstop, then 2028 is the point where you should already have a migration path ready. After that, Nano can still exist in isolated lab scenarios, but it’s harder to justify as a trusted, internet-connected, always-on assistant host.
